Your Ultimate Road Trip To The Heart Of Scotland

At the Getaway Show, we love uncovering journeys that feel like a discovery rather than a checklist, and the North East 250 is exactly that kind of experience. Winding through a part of Scotland that still feels deliciously under-travelled, this circular route blends wild beauty, living history, and rich local character into one unforgettable adventure. In this guest feature, the team behind NE250 share what makes this route so special, and why it continues to surprise even those who think they already know Scotland.

North East 250

‘Stunning’ and ‘I never knew how beautiful this part of Scotland was’ - these are the words we often hear from people when they take the North East 250 route through this little-known part of Scotland.

We have everything. Amazing scenery ranging from mountains to gentle rolling glens with our famous rivers through to seascapes. We have history in abundance - from our Castles (perfection and those in ruins) to the Picts (with the greatest number of Pictish stones anywhere) historic houses and, of course, our whisky.

The wildlife is amazing. To see a red squirrel is the most exquisite experience. Dolphins, otters (in the mouth of the Spey) and Orcas as a regular occurrence is a wonder.

The North East 250 was started in 2017 by the Laird, Guy Macpherson-Grant of Ballindalloch Castle and the owner of the Ballindalloch Distillery.  He had a vision to encourage more people to enjoy this beautiful place, and that vision is certainly bearing fruit. We work with over 250 Business Members as well as our Partners and Supporters (Ballindalloch Castle and Distillery, Benriach Whisky, Northlink Ferries, Leys Group, Shirlaws Motorcycles, Cullen Bay Hotel and our new Supporter, P&J Live). Our joint mission is to work creatively together, promoting not just what we do but the events, activities, work and experiences that people can enjoy when in this part of the world.

The NE250 route itself is circular and encompasses Aberdeen, Fraserburgh, the Moray Firth coastline, then into Speyside, the heart of the whisky industry, through the Cairngorms and then into Royal Deeside.  Our Map doesn’t just show the route itself but includes much information that is essential to the driver, biker, cyclist or walker.  The hard copy Map is available through our website, along with a digital version.

We are very proud of where we live, and along with the more than 250 Business Members on our website we warmly welcome you.

Exhibiting at The Getaway Show, the NE250 will be on hand to showcase the best of the region. Tickets are now available to purchase on Ticket Tailor, AXS, Ticketmaster or in person at The Aberdeen Performing Arts Box Office. We’ll see you there.
